Exclusive: India preparing for cut in oil imports from Iran - sources

By Nidhi Verma NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's oil ministry has asked refiners to prepare for a 'drastic reduction or zero' imports of Iranian oil from November, two industry sources said, the first sign that New Delhi is responding to a push by the United States to cut trade ties with Iran. India has said it does not recognize unilateral restrictions imposed by the United States, and instead follows UN sanctions. India's oil ministry held a meeting with refiners on Thursday, urging them to scout for alternatives to Iranian oil, the sources said.

Turkey condemns Syria regime's 'inhuman' assault on Daraa

Turkey on Friday condemned regime attacks on rebel-held towns in southern Syria as "inhuman", calling on Damascus' allies to stop the offensive that has killed dozens of civilians. Somebody bought $1 million worth of toys for local kids as Toys 'R' Us closed for good

A kind samaritan made the closure of Toys 'R' Us a little easier for the children of North Carolina who don't wanna grow up. The future youth of America will never know the overwhelming feeling of joy while running through the aisles of the giant toy chain. After filing for bankruptcy in September, more than 700 Toys 'R' Us stores will be closing for good on Friday. The toys will reportedly be donated to local children, according to employees who work at the store. Instead of opening the store one last time on Friday, employees spent the day packing up boxes and putting them on a truck for the generous person. Customers looking to get some last minute deals were greeted with locked doors, though some didn't seem to mind upon hearing the news. “Oh, that’s so nice. I’m happy to hear that,” Erin Sampson told CBS 17. “That’s great. I’d like to know who it is,” said Danyel Smith. It's unclear when or how the purchased toys will be distributed to the kids. Maryland shooting suspect battled newspaper in court and lost

Law enforcement sources told the Capital Gazette that police had identified the suspect as Jarrod Warren Ramos, a resident of Laurel, Maryland, who sued the newspaper and one of its journalists in 2012, alleging defamation. Almost a year earlier, Thomas Hartley, a former columnist for The Capital, the group's flagship paper, wrote a column describing the suspect's interactions with an unnamed woman Ramos contacted over Facebook, court documents showed. Hartley said Ramos had sent her numerous emails in which he called her vulgar names and told her to kill herself.

Xi Jinping tells US defence chief China will not give up 'even one inch' of territory it considers its own

President Xi Jinping told James Mattis, the US Defence Secretary, he wouldn’t give up any territory that China considered its own, an unusually blunt warning as security disputes simmer below a fight over trade. Xi made his remarks while meeting Mr Mattis on Wednesday in Beijing, the first such visit by a US defence chief in more than four years. The comments appeared to be a reference to US complaints about Chinese military deployments in the disputed South China Sea and a push by American lawmakers to expand ties with the democratically run island of Taiwan, which Beijing considers a province. “Our stance is steadfast and clear-cut when it comes to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Xi said, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. “We cannot lose one inch of territory passed down by our ancestors. Meanwhile, we want nothing from others.” The meeting illustrates how disputes between the world’s two largest economies extend beyond US President Donald Trump’s plans to slap tariffs on Chinese goods and restrict the country’s investments. American Protectionism in history “This is an important time in the history of China and the United States as we work our way forward,” Mr Mattis said as he sat with Xi in front of a bank of cameras and photographers prior to their private meeting, according to the Associated Press. “I’m here to keep our relationship on a great trajectory, going in the right direction, and to share ideas with your leadership, your military leadership, as we look at the way ahead.” Military Gains Since Xi hosted Mr Mattis’s predecessor, Chuck Hagel, in 2014, China has launched a second aircraft carrier and outlined plans to build a “world-class” military by 2050. The Trump administration, meanwhile, has replaced Barack Obama’s “pivot to Asia” with an “Indo-Pacific” policy that looks to draw India into the regional security framework as a counterweight to China. In recent weeks, prominent Chinese academics have begun to question whether the leadership underestimated the depth of anti-China sentiment in Washington and risked a premature showdown with the world’s sole superpower. Mr Mattis was expected to leave for Seoul later Thursday, where he would likely encounter questions about Mr Trump’s decision to halt joint military drills with South Korea. He’ll then head to Japan, the US’s closest ally in the region, before heading back to Washington.

Air strikes on southern Syria kill 22 civilians: monitor

A barrage of Russian air strikes on rebel-held areas of southern Syria killed 22 civilians on Thursday, a monitoring group said, most of them in a single battered town.
